HISTORY OF THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Founded in 1828 as a church in the home of Isaac Jones, New City Methodists built their first church building in 1836, known as St. John's Methodist Episcopal Church, located on New Hempstead Road near Phillips Hill Road, overlooking the fork in the road. In 1849 a second Methodist church building was located on what is now Main Street. In 1891 the congregation moved to Maple Avenue (opposite what is now the Police and Court building for Clarkstown.) In 1961, in response to a growing Rockland population, the church purchased a large site on Congers Road and constructed our present building. The United Methodist Church of New City has been a center for the Christian formation of countless lives, a comfort in times of distress, and a community of celebration and service in Rockland and around the world. In 2003 we are celebrating our 175th Anniversary! You are invited to be a part of our life and the journey of faith that is our congregation. |
